everybody's always known two things about the cliff. you're almost certainly going to get more taxes in a deal after you go over than in a deal before you go over it. that's because after you go over the cliff, taxes already go up for everybody. so anything you do, any reasonable deal congress reaches, it will be a big tax cut. but the other thing about the fiscal cliff is you don't want to be blamed for going over it. it is going to be bad for the economy. it's bad for the country. what speaker boehner's done is create a situation in which we're going to go over the fiscal cliff. but the people who want higher taxes, the democrats, they're not going to be blamed for it. after all, it was john boehner who walked away from negotiations to try plan "b" last week. then it was john boehner who planned to pass plan "b" that very same week. then it was mr. boehner who said it was up to the senate, someone else's problem. just from a pr perspective, what john boehner has done here is a debacle for the republicans. and the white house, they've

we are definitely going over, that whole fiscal cliff thing where congress and the white house cannot reach a deal, and they may be get us in a recession. it's going to happen. that was the whole point of president obama's press conference this afternoon. >> i still want to get this done. it's the right thing to do for our families and our businesses and the entire economy. but the hour for immediate action is here. it is now. >> allow me a quick moment, that press conference came after president obama met with john boehner and nancy pelosi and harry reed and mitch mcconnell and all the kree congressional leaders and listen to the president here. >> the american people are watching what we do here. obviously their patience is already thin. this is deja vu all over again, america wonders why it is, in this town for some reason, you can't get stuff done in an organized timetable. why everything has to wait for the last minute. we are now at the last minute and the american people are not going to have any pabs for a political -- patience for a politically self-inflicted wound right now.

host: so you say go off the cliff and invoke sequestration? caller: not just that. let's stop everything and have a national discussion and actually talk to real people, like real americans. have the reporters that work for obama go out and talk to real people and said, what do you think we should do? what do we have to do in our family? obamacare is going to cost me a set of tires are a battery for my car every month. host: which reporters specifically work for obama? caller: everybody but the fox news channel. i mean, come on. everybody. host: in "the baltimore sun," the president modestly optimistic. back to the telephones. patrick and los angeles on the line for independents. caller: happy holidays. i just want to say, maybe the $400,000 compromise is not such a bad idea right now. is not that far off from $250,000. i agree with what people are saying about the party politics -- the partisan politics. maybe obama sabina example right now and make a little compromise. -- maybe obama should lead by example right now and have compromised. what about a 10% flat tax?
